Hi There,

Let me introduce myself, my name’s Julia Louise. I’m a self taught oil painter, and I specialize in painting realistic and vividly colorful candid domestic stills. I gather inspiration and reference images from my everyday life, taking effort to never stage a moment past minor compositional changes. Common themes in my work are aesthetic beauty, stillness, curiosity, unexpected light sources, and a sense of belonging. I have a Bachelor’s degree in writing, which I use to help add context to my paintings. I have been painting for the last twenty years, using oils for the last seven, and painting professionally for the last two. I am an artist at the beginning of her career. I make my work from my home studio in Washington, U.S.

I also have a Youtube channel. My videos are process videos of my paintings, and stories from my everyday life. I view these videos as an extension of my art practice, and they hold a valuable behind the scenes look at each painting.

Narrative of a life

Life is a story, and narrative is at its core. I’ve read hundreds of books and plan to read hundreds more— because the best stories, whether in books, movies, or TV, capture something real. There’s a concept in writing that the more specific the detail, the more relatable it becomes. Consider: “There were clothes scattered on the ground” versus “A faded pink baby sock lay deep in the mud, pounded down by thousands of feet.” A vividly painted moment allows the viewer’s mind to adapt it, comparing it with their own remembered experience.

Everyone is living an incredibly personal, unique life; yet at times, we’re all living the same one. We crave comfort, react instinctively, and try to make sense of the world. We move through life moment to moment, elbow to elbow with others who, despite entirely different circumstances, are working through identical emotions. We may not realize it, but we’re all navigating parallel stories. The things that make us human are both deeply personal and universally shared.

This project is about that paradox— being so personal that it becomes universal. It’s about capturing the specific in a way that resonates with anyone, seeing meaning in ordinary moments, and finding connection across experiences.
